E-essay

Trowa's being taken from around ep 18 or 19, so before he goes to space. And before Quatre blows him up. YAY.

Alright, so we're going to do some random stuff about Trowa in this post here. Because we can. None of this really has that much proof other than me. So, sh. But feel free to kick me.

On Names
Trowa's name isn't really Trowa. Not until after Endless Waltz does he decide to stick with the name, so all during Gundam Wing Trowa Barton is just an alias to him. He's "Nanashi" for about fourteen years of his life or so until the original Trowa Barton is killed and Nanashi takes that name for his own. I think that Trowa was using 'Trowa Barton' temporarily, like how he was an OZ soldier temporarily. It was a role he was fulfilling. As Trowa, he knew what was expected. Trowa Barton had goals and destiny, Nanashi did not. The role of a Gundam Pilot/Trowa Barton came before everything else, which is why in the earlier episodes there are far more instances of Suspicious Bastard!Trowa. However, as Gundam Wing progresses Trowa Barton becomes less and less of a role and more and more of how Trowa thinks of himself. At the end of Endless Waltz Trowa ends up keeping the name (thanks to some help from friends~) and that settles his identity a bit more.

On Heero and following your emotions.
The first glimpse of Trowa that the audience gets is Heavyarms annihilating some base and Trowa says that whoever lays eyes on a Gundam has to die. He carries his orders out to a T. He's not a nice person, and while not an actively mean person, he will shoot you in the back as you flee. When Noin comes to Heero and Trowa for Zechs it's Trowa who pulls the gun on her and is suspicious of them. Heero and Zechs have some deep understand about wanting to kill each other, apparently. The Siberia duel is not something Trowa approves of, in fact the whole Siberia affair is a bit of a 'mess' to him. In Siberia when Noin's men turn back he calls them weak and then goes to 'correct their mistake'. Emotions are in a different mental compartment for Trowa. His actions are ruled by what a role demands and not what he personally demands. However, then he and Heero go on the 'let's go find all the Noventas and see if they want to kill me' trip and Trowa gets an interesting view of Heero. (Not that kind of view).

On Quatre and actually liking people instead of blowing them up.

Now, Trowa doesn't actively dislike people, but as seen in Episode Zero and in the series he doesn't really consider himself human and/or worth whatever. Course, this is all very odd when he meets Quatre who's the ~~pacifist~~ guy doing the "*BLAM* ;~; OMG I AM SO SORRY" thing. Trowa's all surrender-y and then Quatre is all "Hey, let's be friends, I surrendered first!" and ignores his manbitches who have their guns and the like. Trowa wants to like people, he really does, but the whole soldier =/= being friendly. But there's Quatre, who is rather, friendly extraordinaire. And they bond over music.

I would say that while Trowa may respect various other Gundam Wing characters he really only truly trusts Quatre. Heero comes close, but no cigar. When we get psycho!Quatre blowing shit up, Trowa is totally all for the trusting the psychoblond. Which ends up in him getting blown up by said blond. Yay. However, then we get amnesiac!Trowa who is completely different from normal Trowa. In that he's sort of a sad-stoic and when he remembers stuff or reminded of stuff kind of flips out. He calls Catherine sister in this period and when Duo shows up Trowa's brain fizzles. Contrast with when Quatre shows up and Trowa's more of "…huh, I think I should know him…" and then we get a great ~~gay~~ like about how Trowa can hear Quatre crying. From space.

Despite any of this Trowa's not going to be all vocal about it. He's more of the guy to just have your favorite things memorized and then get/do them for you as opposed to asking. I want to go as far as to say that he doesn't quite recognize it either. Quatre's a positive and not in a compartment and Trowa will let that one slide. Everything else has a very strict order of things. Even Catherine, she's "sister figure" and when she doesn't run away and instead invades the other realm of his life it's like "whut". But Quatre's both an ally and a friend, which makes him unique.

Also, we should note that when Trowa is an amnesiac he still kicks ass. Bwaha.

On ~~Just~~ Communication
For someone who the fandom has labeled as the quiet guy he talks a fair amount. Of course, a lot of his talking is … not with people but either to or when they're not around. When he travels with Heero he talks about Heero but not to his face. When he talks to the OZ soldiers he's exploding he just sort of muses outwardly. He does not share his motivations and is unlikely to directly talk back to who is perceived authority.

He is not a reactionary however. So unless it is something he's already considered there probably won't be an immediate response. Instead of several looks he'll do one long questioning look. A few things surprise Trowa, but they aren't that many. As to date we can tell he has a kind of odd sense of humor, since the only thing that made him laugh was Heero's "It hurts" sort of statement to blowing up. I would also assume, however, that this wasn't a "hahaha that's funny" laugh but more of a "wow for once I have no fucking idea what to do" laugh. Either that or Trowa enjoys mocking Heero's pain.

Strategy and First Meetings
Trowa doesn't trust you. Even if he's not outwardly suspicious he doesn't trust you. He will work with you, if he needs to, and he can act like he trusts you but he really doesn't. Quatre has his outright trust and after that Heero has trust. He's not going to pull a gun on you unless you're somehow threatening (i.e. a known OZ officer that sort of thing). That being said, he's probably thinking of a few ways to take you apart when you first meet. Not like "Oh and then I'll poke out their eye" but a sort of first impression thing. Silently, 'course.

Trowa is a team player if the role is right. As a soldier, a mercenary or an OZ officer he easily fits into the chain of command. When he's doing the Gundam pilot thing a bit less but all that needs to be added is 'teamwork' to the equation and it works well. He's pretty much also a 'as need to know' basis when it comes to sharing his knowledge. And a 'come what may' in general when things happen. Anticipation and anxiety not so much on this side.

Revenge you don't have to worry about … unless he decides it's right for the role or decides eliminating you would be a good idea. Then you should cover your balls. He's pretty good at strategy, speaking of going to plot extensive revenge on people. Not a strategic genius, but what needs to be done is easy enough to figure out. He'll also lie to you and feel no remorse if the situation calls for it. Go morals!

And there's The Hair. Really, we don't know what it does. I'd say it goes one way… but sometimes it goes to the left and sometimes to the right and in zero gravity it goes … all over. BUT it will always be distractingly… unibang-ish. And there. Unless he gets a haircut and then my brain might melt.

He's also got a burn scar on his back. DUN DUN DUN~

What's Okay To Mention Around Him:
A lot of things. Trowa's a pretty mellow dude when it comes to random-ass stuff. ~~HA more stoic than Heero~~. He's really the kind of guy who might have a reaction but he's not going to share it with you. I'm going to say about everything is okay to mention around him. He's more the kind of guy to hear something, think it over/whatever and then plant a bomb in your bed…. Than kick your shin, I mean.

Abilities:
Trowa can blow your shit up. Uh, he can drive probably almost anything (cars, trucks, I'm betting a good number of planes/boats/other vehicles) and every mobile suit he's encountered in Gundam Wing. Can shoot a gun, woo hoo, and since Heavyarms has a knife I'm assuming is fairly proficient with that as well, and ~~punches Duo in the stomach~~ prolly okay with hand to hand too. Mainly though, he can do impossible acrobatics, like a triple axel lutz sow cow sunshine flip spin. And jump really high. Trowa was raised by mercenaries so all misc. mercenary skills probably exist, like …cleaning and mending and cooking and basic stuff like that.

Infiltrating enemy forces is also something he's pretty good at. He worked as a mechanic for a while as well. Trowa can usually accept a role and go with it if he needs to be. Even convincing his own allies that he might have betrayed them (YE OF LITTLE FAITH~~wufei~~) He's also good at following orders. And good with animals, vicious lions kept for entertainment purposes love him.

Notes for the Psychics:
Nothing really. I imagine the Trowa psychic channel is pretty boring. He keeps his thoughts to himself. I'm sure there's a landmine of seekrit emo just waiting to get out, and Catherine (when she stabs him in the face) mentions that he wants to die (which seems to be common with all Gundam Wing characters) … I would assume he's pretty compartmentalized in there, in his head.

Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/spit at/step on/etc?:
Please contact me for the major stuff. I'm more reliably reachable on AIM (heir in actual) but sometimes I'll be on IRC too. Uhm, as for spitting/stepping on/other such things Trowa… might just let you. Unless you're perceived as a threat or he's back in suspicious bastard mode. So, violence this way may come if you do.

Episode Zero, Diary

A.C. 195 Date Unknown
Today is the day when the person known as "me" changed. I have no name. My earliest memories are of being picked up by the mercenaries. They became my trainers. By around the age of ten, I'd already worked on most heavy weapons, I had no qualms about piloting a mobile suit. But a soldier has no guarantees as he moves about. It's because of this that when the gun was pointed at me today, I felt nothing. Only, I decided to take a gamble when I saw the downed man..... The result, "Trowa Barton" will go down to the Earth.

Diary Notes: After he left Midii Une [Episode Zero: Act 5], he wandered about serving as a mercenary. In AC 195, he ended up in L3 working as a mechanic on HeavyArms.
Catherine scolds him about his 'come what may' attitude.
When the real Trowa Barton attempts to tell his father (Dekim) about Professor H's change in heart, he's shot and killed.

Episode Zero/Midii Une: Who is not Lady Une. But this is Trowa's childhood so I get to talk about her. Trowa and Midii first meet at gun point (awww, how sweet) and he decides not to kill her and blah blah and Midii is all "Why did you save me?" and he says "Because we're the same." Which confuses the poor girl. We, as the readers, get a flashback of baby!Trowa getting through from a speeding horse and cart with what suspiciously looks like baby!Catherine nearby. Nudge nudge wink wink. In which Trowa is orphaned and fends for himself and gets picked up by mercenaries. Back to the 'present', Midii gives Trowa a cross necklace and tells him God will watch over him. (insert Trowa being distracted by the circus here)

Midii: You looked kinda nostalgic
Nanashi: That's not possible, I've been a soldier since I was born.

Meanwhile, Catherine yells at the mercs because she hates war. And she remembers the tragedy of the horse and cart getting exploded. It's because her parents named her brother something lame like Triton Bloom, the name gods smited them for such a travesty.

The mercs had an ambush planned, but surprise surprise the ambush was anticipated. The captain says he'll hold them off and everyone else should scram. The mercs are all whoops, now we're going to wipe out the rebels, sorry cap! Some heartwarming I'm going to kill you conversation goes one. Trowa mows them all down, the captain is kinda O.o but those dudes you just killed made you what you are. Trowa is all Yeah, but I've been a soldier since I was born and they taught me to destroy my enemy. The captain says he's not human.

Midii: I'm not going to thank you.
Nanashi: Don't worry, I wasn't expecting it.
Midii: I'm… not worth anything alive…
Nanashi: … Me neither.

All the mercs but Trowa die. Sad. Surprise! It was Midii's cross necklace that she gave Trowa that gave away the mercs. He tosses the necklace down and points a gun at her.

Midii: So, even you get mad sometimes.
You said before that I was you… but that wasn't true. I'm not as fortunate as you. There's nothing that ties you down. You have no name, no past …and now, no comrades.

Midii (I love you…)
I have a name, Midii Une. I have a sick father and three little brothers. I couldn't have survived this long without becoming a spy and getting all these people killed! (I … longed to be like you.) I can't even tell the person I love how I feel about him! Do you know why!? Because I'm not empty like you. I'm filled with things… My family! My Job! My Guilt!

Midii: (Always… I wanted to be with you always)
That's why… That's why I hate empty guys like you! (I loved you!)
Nanashi: That all you have to say? You're better off than me… you have a place to go home to. Goodbye, Midii.

He doesn't kill her, but blows up the transmitter she used to spy. When she tells him to wait, calling him Nanashi, he says "You've got the wrong guy. I'm not Nanashi I'm... … a traveler, looking for a place to go home too…"

1. "Who am I?"
The path of "No-name" Trowa

Trowa was found by mercenaries when he was four, and under their tutelage became a first-class soldier. But even at that point, as with his "name" of No-name he hadn't been able to see any value in living. After his mercenary squad was destroyed, the 14-year old Trowa went up into space, and became a maintance man in the L-3 colonies. There, he accidentally witnessed the murder of the real Trowa Barton, and subsequently volunteered to pilot a mobile suit under the dead man's name. Having descended to Earth, he seems to have suceeded in finding "a place to go home to" with his circus troupe, but there's no knowing whether he can continue living peacefully with them. It will probably take a little time to be sure.

2. The knife-throwing woman
The relationship with Catherine

When Trowa descends to Earth in Operation Meteor, he chooses the circus as his cover. As he spends time with Catherine, he begins to feel at peace in the circus. After he loses his memory, he calls Catherine his sister, but there is a possibility that they are really siblings. Catherine had a brother who was lost -- actually, went missing -- in the way named Triton Bloom. And Trowa has a burn scar on his back he didn't get in battle. The truth is unclear, but there does seem to be a bond of mutual understand between them somehow.

3. No work, no food

Trowa had to polish his skills to survive in the war-torn world. Aided by his natural talent he had become a full-fledged soldier by age 10, and was adored by the captain and the other mercenaries. Also, out of necessity, he picked up a poker face with which he can calmly deal with any situation. How sad that the only reason he survived was because of his fighting abilities. His skill at slipping into unknown places is also the result of his training as a soldier.

Gundam Wing is another mecha series. Rather, it's another Gundam series. A fairly popular japanimation series about people in space who fly giant robots. Sometime in the far future when man can live in outer space there are colonies and there are not-colonies. The not-colonies are a united force of the Alliance and tend to rule the colonies, "with an iron fist" wiki so helpfully points out. Peace seeking is interrupted by an assassination (damn those assassins) and fighting breaks out. Five scientists make these super cool nifty GUNDAMS and set in motion a mildly convoluted "operation meteor" to strike back at OZ (plot!).

Trowa Barton (whose real name is not Trowa Barton) is one of five pilots of one of the Gundams. His is Heavyarms, and it has a gun. And a knife. He sits on the same side of the personality line as Heero does, the silent protagonist. However, while Heero favors 'hns' and other such expressive grunts, Trowa merely goes with silence, or the more traditional '...' Contrary to fanon belief, Trowa does actually talk. He's not mute, as evidenced by a few monologues places throughout the series, and he even laughs... once. But hey, that counts for something, right? A few other dimensions of his character are sneaky and hidden throughout the series. However, it is evidenced that he's calculating and not slow to act so much as he considers his options. Subdued or low-key would also be good personality descriptors for Trowa. Last (and I swear this has a segue), Trowa has a thing for masks, metaphorically and literally.

And one of his image songs is "clown". Really.

..- This is unexpected. Even more so to have been delivered such a message upon my arrival to "Camp". I have no desire to become a ninja, but if I am mistaken for one it might be useful. It would be to my advantage to be able to blend in, and judging from the A.A.P.N.R. the ninja population must be fairly high. However, the appearance of such an association would impede this charade, and should be taken into account. The fact that they monitor movement and are aware of simple things like the pausing before speech is also noted.

This area seems to be highly populated with people in various stages of decomposition. A weapon with a large amount of firepower and range would be ideal. Other options are as follows: escape, distractive combat, avoidance and direct physical force.

Materials found are inadequate to deal with the undead, henceforth labeled as the Zclass Omni-Mobile Biological Infected lifEforms [ZOMBIEs]. Both the lead pipe labeled 'for personal use only' and small rectangular 'homeland security: terrorist level is now prune' sticker are poor choices to fend off any attacker. Insufficient cover has been provided in the arrangement of wooden shacks. There is evidence that both civilian and military personnel have inhabited these shacks, shown by the odd appearance of both shell casings (remnants of the victims of the ZOMBIEs?) and a variety of female undergarments that have been proudly displayed on a flagpole. Acquiring the knowledge of a native or even the assistance of another nonZOMBIE would be useful. So far many of the lifeforms encountered fall into the category of enemy.

The potential for allies may have been found ... however the large sign proclaiming "ALLIES HERE, PLEASE INSERT A QUARTER TO CONTINUE GAMEPLAY" is strangely disheartening.
